Resort World Sentosa

Location: Sentosa Island

DESCRIPTION

‘Sentosa’ is the Malay word for ‘tranquility’. Once a tranquil and peaceful island, then a fort, and now one of two integrated resorts in Singapore, the island of Sentosa has been transformed into a massive playground for Singaporeans and tourists alike. The island offers living accommodation with moorings, attractions including Universal Studios’ theme park, the Adventure Cove Water Park, the Maritime Experiential Museum, Marine Life Park, Fort Silosa, and many others. It also boasts a two kilometre sheltered beach, fourteen hotels, bars restaurants and night clubs.

HISTORY

Sheltered and at the access point to Keppel Bay, Sentosa Island is steeped in history having been a focal point for invaders, wars and a frequent change of rulers over centuries.

In 1827 the island was fortified as a point of defence. By 1930 four defensive forts had been established on Sentosa and it was a primary British fortress during the second world war. Once the British surrendered to the Japanese, the Japanese used the island as a holding camp for British prisoners of war. When the Japanese surrendered to the British in 1945, Sentosa Island was used once again as a British Fort. It was handed to the newly independent Government of Singapore after the Indonesian confrontation of 1960.

The Singapore Government decided to develop Sentosa as a holiday playground for the people in 1970. In 1974 a cable car system operating from Mount Faber to Sentosa was opened. Development of the island has been ongoing.

Construction of Resorts World Sentosa Singapore began on 16 April 2007 and the 4 hotels, Crockfords Tower, Hard Rock Hotel Singapore, Festive Hotel, Hotel Michael were opened on 20 January 2010. The grand opening of the integrated resort held on 7 December 2012, officiated by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong together with Genting Group Chairman Lim Kok Thay.
